In their continual striving for artistic perfection Genesis, a very English band from late 60s, and from public school would you believe, attempted a 'grand travaille' called "The Lamb Lies Down in Broadway", more an opera type thing than a rock n' roll LP. Strong on narrative and large in sweep the great opus decreed a change in presentation... Genesis ditched their previous fantasy surrealist painterly covers in favour of cool photography, and our good selves at Hipgnosis. The story for this album concerned a central character called Rael and his adventures in pursuit of self realisation, so to speak. We tried to distil the essence of 'Lamb' in a sequence of photos featuring Rael undergoing a set of experiences representative of the songs on the album. These photographic tableaux were then connected like the frames of a comic strip, a fantasy sequence executed not in normal illustration but in cold hard photography, picture alongside picture, flat on the surface - a surface from which Rael 'steps out' in order to look back at himself and gain a different perspective. I look back now like Rael stepping out and find I quite quite like it. A little stiff and self conscious in presentation perhaps but not uninteresting. I like still the hand gripped tightly round the frame divide as if it were a real wooden post.
