ZEIT [iš šio albumo [tadream] fanų elektroninės konferencijos]

Hi,

somebody complained nobody writes on 'Zeit'? Somebody said Zeitis 'one note over four Vinyl sides?' This may be right, but:why not?

I won't go into argumentations saying Zeit is TD's best album, andthereby making pa and son Froese smile... but everybody on this listwho knows me also knows how much I love the Alpha Centauri/Zeit/Atemtriptichon (is this an english word?).

I can get a bit tired over Nebulous Dawn - I don't listen to thispiece as much as to the other three. It needs some kind of settingor mood - at night, of course, in absolute silence (I always had forgranted when I lived on the countryside in Germany, right at theBelgium border where there is nothing but forest and swamp), andthen, preferably at full moon, listening to Zeit was a wonderful trip. No, I did not take any drugs - not even nicotine or alcohol. The musicwas the drug. The cello and organ layers in BoLP do have the mostobvious *time*ing, whereas in the last track, there does not seem tobe much timeing at all - but there is! the ocasional female voice kindof sound and the melody in the background bass don't come at random. You're lost in the background and all those little beautiful tinynoises.

It is a great album, but definetly not something to play when you'redoing something else, like washing dishes etc., or when it is bright.Anything you do or can see during listening distracts too much from'Zeit'. Zeit is really something to enjoy.

The reworks on Dream Roots collection or Book of Dreams destroy allthat completly. Edgar may be on distance to this early works, andhe may have had completely different intentions with it, but I don'tcare at all (just like he doesn't care about fans) - I simplyenjoy it.

Well, every time I've listened to Zeit this week I've fallen asleep. I thinkthe Cello intro does it. Each movement(??) seems to have a life of its own.The first night I put it on and immediately realized that Zeit is so unlikeany other TD album. However, the creative subtlety in Zeit is on par withthe rest of their catalog. The first TD album I heard was Phaedra andtherefore Ziet was listened to in retrospect. I've got to believe that thisalbum was an influence on Robert Fripp and Brian Eno for "No Pussyfooting",but then maybe it was Theremin.

Anyway, one time I was listening to Zeit, falling asleep & waking up, againand each time I was swept away by this metamorphosis of sound. No drummachine, no sequencers, just purely elegant electronic music, from space. This is the soundtrack to the Hubble photographs. I like it in thebackground where it can interject. And maybe I like it better with a breakbetween songs(??), but I'm not sure.

I think this one is a milestone for Tangerine Dream and for modern music ingeneral, at least from my experience.

Tim

Had any good dreams? :-)

Very true. Zeit is monumental. Thinking of it now I got this new imageof Zeit and other TD works. Not as musical works but sculptures. Zeitbeing the huge monument (almost like that monolith from 2001) in thecenter of the garden and all the other sculptures around it in theirrespective places and sizes. Eg. Rubycon close by with water flowingbetween. It's hard to put in words but for me that image feels quiteright. You are free to disagree, of course.

I like that imagery. I mostly see Zeit like animated gaseous or liquidshapes. Like oil and water on an overhead projector, or mandelbrots stackedon each other... After listening to all of these TD albums, I was justreally struck by Zeit as raising them to a new level. Electronic Meditationand Alpha Centauri are very experimental in comparison. With Zeit the musicseems more planned and intentional. Its evolution is finely crafted, neverheavy handed. In retrospect, Zeit gives me a much stronger indication of thefuture direction of TD.

For something completely different, try listening to Zeit overlaid withBeethoven. Maybe "Grosse Fugue"??

You converted me, Armin. I remember when I joined the list 2 years ago, yousaid I should try Zeit and other older stuff. I had Zeit and sold it back. But after listening to more and more experimental stuff, I went back andbought the re-release on Sequel, and I think it's great, so I went out andbought Atem and AC, and enjoy them, too, though not as much as Zeit. Astrong 4AS - even though I think I only gave it a low 2AS when I first castmy vote. Great spacey, slowly evolving pieces.

Phil D.

I once thought Zeit was monotonous and terrible (I'm sure many of you stilldo). Armin used to sing its praises (and probably will again), and Iwondered why. I had the 2-CD version on Relativity, and sold it back to asecondhand store. A couple years later, when Castle reissued all the oldones, I bought Alpha Centauri and Atem, and liked them quite a bit. So, Idecided to give Zeit another chance. Now I enjoy it (though I have to be injust the right mood), and feel it was quite revolutionary - so much so thatKlaus Schulze apparently decided to copy it a year later with Cyborg (ok, Idon't really think he did, but it was amazingly similar, both drone-orientedwith orchestral elements).

Nebulous Dawn, with its water-based sounds and deep pulsing, really seems toset the tone for Edgar's solo release Aqua a couple years later.

This is way out, trippy space music of the first order. As with AC, JulianCope's liner notes on the Castle reissue are highly entertaining. I don'tknow if TD was doing drugs at this point, but thanks to them, I don't need to- I just put on Zeit. Like, wow, man.

Phil D.

yes, Phil, I will.

Oh, but Phil Naunton (the other Phil) gave such a wonderful description,I would have to but couldn't re-write it. So I will just add this littlestory:

Nan-in, a japanese master during the Meiji era(1868 - 1912), received a university professor whocame to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served tea. He pured his visitor's cupfull, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he nolonger could restrain himself. `It is overfull. Nomore will go in.'.

`Like this cup', Nan-in said, `you are full of yourown opinions and speculations. How can I showyou Zen unless you first empty your cup?'.

Put 'Zeit' instead of 'Zen'. Empty yourself, and go foran ultimate spiritual experience while absorbing 'Zeit'.Music is about sounds. Usually you associate other thingswith the sounds you hear (most trivial a picture of theinstrument). Listening to 'Zeit' I don't. Its pure sound.Best on Vinyl, btw.

Armin

Goes well with one of my favorites:

"The more you know the less you understand." From the Tao Te Ching.

Phil N.
