Inferno: Cantos VIII-XI

Dante sees the fifth and sixth circles which contain the wrathful and the heretical respectively. The fifth circle also contains the sullen who are unseen and gurgling at the bottom of the marsh since they grumbled and complained when they should have enjoyed life.

When Dante and Virgil are about to enter the City of Dis (Dis is another name for Satan) which contains the lower regions of Hell, they are stopped by demons who refuse to let them pass and Dante is afraid because Virgil was always able to let him pass. Furthermore, Medusa comes and tries to turn Dante into stone and Virgil has to shield his eyes. But eventually the angel comes to let them in.

In the sixth circle, heretics burn in their graves.
