Purgatorio: Cantos XVII-XIX
Fourth Terrace: The Slothful
Fifth Terrace: The Greedy (Avaricious and Prodigal)
When Dante reaches the fourth terrace where he sees people running a marathon to make up for the zeal they lacked on earth.
Virgil explains that the vice of sloth is a lack of love, that is, of God.
The lower three terraces of Pride, Envy, and Wrath are perverted love (selfishness). The upper three terraces of Greed, Gluttony, and Lust are excessive love (too much of a good thing).
The remedy for sloth is mourn and be sorry for our sins
When Dante reaches the fifth terrace he sees people lying face down on the ground. He meets a former pope who explains that since he saved up riches, he and everyone else here have to look down at the dirt instead of toward heaven because they were too preoccupied with earthly goods.
The remedy for Greed is to hunger and thirst for righteousness.
