Finally Dante has arrived in Purgatory proper where sins are actually purged. Looking about the first terrace, he sees people carrying heavy rock- the burden of their pride in life. There are beautiful murals on the wall but they can't look at them because their burden weighs them down. Oberto tells Dante he was arrogant in life he'll bear this burden until God is satisfied. Dante also sees the famous painter Odersi of Gubbio and praises him but he answers humbly that another artist, Franco de Bolognese, has surpassed him.
