Williams was 51st in the chart last year, and now makes 43rd place, just below the Eurythmics, according to the compilers, with 682 weeks in the UK singles and album charts.

Book of British Hit Singles and Albums assistant editor James Bradley said: “For Robbie to continue to speed up the chart so strongly is a fantastic achievement and proves that he is still winning new fans while keeping the old faithful ones.

“It looks like his popularity will continue for years to come.”

More than 1,000 people voted in the poll for Yahoo! Messenger.
Spokesman Darren Cairns said the results were a vote for the more mature voice.

He said: “It seems it’s not what you say, it’s the way you say it, and according to these results the more mature often say it considerably better.

“Sean Connery, the sexiest voice in UK showbiz, still has a licence to thrill with his voice.”
